Connecting science with society, the three-day Low Vision Conference 2024, under the auspices of the Department of Medicine of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Aristotle University, took place on Saturday, September 21, at the KEDEA building on the University campus.
The conference was introduced by the President, Professor Stefanos Triaridis, who referred to the scientific and social sensitivities that modern universities must have.
The programme included the full range of conditions that can cause low vision.
Particular emphasis was placed on the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of these conditions in order to reduce their impact in the best possible way.
In addition, however, the main objective of the conference was the thorough reference to the newest stem cell and gene therapies, which modern research has brought to the fore, giving prospects and hope to our fellow human beings suffering from diseases that lead to low vision.
This major social problem has today more prospects for treatment, thanks to the emerging therapies brought by modern research.
The conference, with international participation, provided a scientific platform to strengthen cooperation in research to promote the health and well-being of particularly vulnerable social groups, such as people with severe visual impairment.
